How to fight Alzheimer?
Well, theories say that art is the concept that encompasses all the creations made by the human being to express a sensible vision about the world, either real or imaginary through plastic, linguistic or sound resources. Art allows expressing ideas, emotions, perceptions and feelings. That is why we emphasize the importance of creative artistic activity, which stimulates the cognitive reserve and the cerebral plasticity, that allows to protect the individual preventing or delaying the cognitive deterioration.
Dementias are characterized by an acquired and persistent deterioration of one or more cognitive capacities of sufficient severity to lead to a loss of autonomy and functional independence. The main causes are Alzheimer’s disease and cerebrovascular disease. Population aging has been increasing steadily in recent years, with this problem being greatest in developing countries.
Alzheimer’s disease is very prevalent and increases exponentially with aging. Available data from epidemiological studies show that more than a quarter of the population (26.4%) older than 60 years have cognitive impairment and 8.3% dementia.
The global cost of the disease was estimated in 2010 at 604 billion dollars, equivalent to Swiss GDP.
This has placed it as a central issue of global public health by the World Dementia Council (created by the G8).
If we consider the approaching epidemic, the proposed action should be based mainly on population-based educational preventive campaigns aimed at controlling vascular risk factors and on the enhancement of protective factors such as the cognitive reserve. The latter refers to the influence exerted by experiences such as years of schooling, type of occupation, and creative artistic activities in the cognitive performance of an individual.
The cognitive reserve is the ability to enhance performance through the recruitment or incorporation of different neural networks, which would be reflected clinically in the use of alternative cognitive strategies. Thus, subjects with greater reserves would process tasks more efficiently than those with less reserve, or in other words, an individual with greater ability to appeal to alternative neural networks or different strategies in response to tasks that demand increasing resources , would have greater cognitive reserve and greater protection against brain damage.
Many studies and their conclusions indicate that the increase of neuronal activity through stimuli given by education, occupation, social, artistic activities, etc., ie the cognitive reserve, has a protective role in patients with mild cognitive impairment.

Creativity is the ability to generate new and original ideas, leaving traditional stereotypes and patterns, and producing innovations in the social context in which they occur. We live in a changing and increasingly complex world in which creativity implies a reaction to the problems and challenges of the future; therefore this capacity (innovative, transformative and constructive) becomes one of the engines of the scientific and cultural evolution of humanity.
The essential personality trait for a creative mind is “openness to experience,” which is translated into a special interest in varied experimentation, which others call “intellectual curiosity.”
